Crystal defects and electro-optical properties of D-KDP

Abstract
This article presents a qualitative approach of the relationship between the occurrence of crystal defects and the disturbances of the induced birefringence which appear during the operation of (001) D-KDP solid-state light-valves. The crystal defects are ascribed to growth or seed effects, and both contributions to the above disturbances are discussed. On this basis, conclusions are drawn with regard to the choice of the most appropriate method and conditions for growing highly deuterated single crystals.

Résumé
Cet article présente une étude qualitative de la relation entre la présence de défauts cristallins dans les monocristaux D-KDP et les perturbations de la biréfringence induite qui sont observées lors de leur utilisation en modulateurs électro-optiques. On discute des rôles respectifs des accidents de croissance et de la qualité du germe sur l'apparition des défauts cristallins et on en tire des conclusions quant au choix de la méthode et des conditions de croissance les mieux appropriés pour les cristaux très deutériés.
